Heuristic Evaluation of E-commerce Platform

Packaging Industry | Sr. UX Researcher

Overview

The purpose of this heuristic evaluation was to provide an expert review on the platform as it stands today by examining in great detail the dashboard, header, and navigation of the platform. In addition to this effort, the UX team and I also covered areas like cart and checkout, order history, and so on together. During this heuristic evaluation, I documented potential areas of friction, inconsistencies, copy that may be confusing, UX standards that aren’t being followed, and so on.

"Heuristic Evaluation (Nielsen and Molich, 1990; Nielsen 1994) is a usability engineering method for finding the usability problems in a user interface design so that they can be attended to as part of an iterative design process. Heuristic evaluation involves having a small set of evaluators examine the interface and judge its compliance with recognized usability principles (the "heuristics")." - Source

Heuristic Evaluation | My Process

Heuristic Focus Areas

My findings have been broken down based on the six heuristics the team and I agreed upon which include the following:

  • Visibility of system status | The design should always keep users informed about what is going on, through appropriate feedback within a reasonable amount of time.

  • Match between the system & the real world | The design should speak the users' language. Use words, phrases, and concepts familiar to the user, rather than internal jargon. Follow real-world conventions, making information appear in a natural and logical order.

  • User Control & Freedom | Users often perform actions by mistake. They need a clearly marked "emergency exit" to leave the unwanted action without having to go through an extended process.

  • Consistency & Standards | Users should not have to wonder whether different words, situations, or actions mean the same thing. Follow platform and industry conventions.

  • Error Prevention | Good error messages are important, but the best designs carefully prevent problems from occurring in the first place. Either eliminate error-prone conditions, or check for them and present users with a confirmation option before they commit to the action.

  • Aesthetic & Simple Design | Interfaces should not contain information that is irrelevant or rarely needed. Every extra unit of information in an interface competes with the relevant units of information and diminishes their relative visibility.

Heuristic Evaluation | Dashboard Findings

Currently, the purpose of the dashboard is to provide users a quick review of recent orders while also allowing users to order directly from the dashboard using Quick Order.

Heuristic Evaluation | Header & Navigation Findings

The purpose of navigation is to provide a clear and easy guide of what MySEE has to offer to the user.
